The Strawberry Patch

By Robin Shirley, CHHC

Here on the east coast, everything has bloomed early due to the warm weather we had in February and March. Believe it or not, even the strawberries are already ripening, and it is only April 23rd as I write this!

My family is getting ready to harvest the strawberries. We have 2 long rows of strawberry plants in our vegetable garden, plus a whole mess of strawberries going wild and popping up around our blueberry bushes. We’ve been picking about 10 strawberries per day so far, but as the season progresses, we’ll be picking up to a gallon some days. By the end of the season we will have frozen about 15 gallons of strawberries, or more!

Last spring I finally perfected a strawberry milkshake recipe that I like to enjoy during the really hot days of the summer. Here it is below. I hope you enjoy it too!

Strawberry Milkshake
Serves 1

Ingredients:
1 ½ cups good water
½ cup of hemp seeds
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Pinch sea salt
1 tablespoon raw honey or 8 drops stevia extract
1 cup ice cubes
1 ½ cups frozen strawberries

Directions:

Blend the first 5 ingredients together on high for about 30 seconds. Then add the ice cubes and frozen berries and blend until creamy (about 15 seconds). A high-speed blender, like a Vita-Mix, works best for this recipe.

For a creamier base, add colostrum powder, almond butter, or more hemp seeds during the first blend. For more sweetness, add more honey or stevia, a few drops at a time. For more or less thickness, adjust the amount of ice used.

This recipe is excerpted from the spring edition of the Health Coach Journal
